What is Art Therapy?

What can Art Therapy help you with

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that combines art-making with talking to a trained art psychotherapist. It can help individuals explore aspects of themselves that may be difficult to express through words, particularly when these experiences are connected to past trauma.

Art therapy can help reduce distress and support social, emotional, and mental wellbeing by encouraging personal insight and self-compassion. It can also provide individuals with tools to better understand and support their mental health.

Art therapy can support people all of ages, from all stages of life. You do not need to have any art skills to have it.

How I like to work with clients

I have a gentle, compassionate and warm approach to therapy. I value each client’s individuality, experiences and needs, and tailor my approach to support you as an individual. I aim to create a safe, accepting space where you can feel heard, understood and able to explore whatever you may be experiencing, without judgement. I believe therapy is a collaborative process, and I work at your pace, with sensitivity to what feels right for you.

Sometimes words may not be there, and that’s okay. Art psychotherapy can offer another way of exploring thoughts, feelings and experiences through art-making and writing, within a safe and supportive environment. You don’t need to be “good at art” or have any previous experience. The creative process is not about producing something perfect, but about having another way to express and explore what may be difficult to put into words.

My approach incorporates compassion-focused, mindfulness and trauma-informed techniques, with an emphasis on connecting and integrating the mind and body. I bring warmth, curiosity and compassion to our work together, creating space to explore both the difficult and more hopeful parts of your experience.

Sessions last 60 minutes, and I work with both adults and children. Whether you come with something specific you would like to explore, or simply a sense that something doesn’t feel quite right, there is space to explore this together.
